Why you should hire an interpreter
Are you planning your next trip to Japan or do you have a meeting upcoming with Japanese clients or business partners?
You might want to consider hiring an interpreter. Even if your business partners speak English or you have bilingual staff, hiring an interpreter usually is the safer option.
Interpreters make sure that both sides understand everything
If you talk to foreign business partners at least one party is not talking in their native language. Often both talk in a foreign language. While this is enough for small talk it can lead to problems when you want to talk about more complex issues.
When communicating in a foreign language you or your business partner might not understand the small but important details you talk about. When you fly all the way to Japan for a meeting you want to make extra sure that everything is understood.
Japanese people have the tendency to just pretend they understand everything and nod politely when in truth they don’t.
When you hire a professional interpreter, they will familiarize themselves with the topic beforehand and will conduct a research into your industry and its jargon. They give you and your business partner the option to both talk in their respective native languages which avoids misunderstandings and increases the chance for a successful outcome of the meeting.
More than just bilingual
If you employ bilingual staff, it might be tempting to just bring them along for the meeting. However, just because some does speak two languages it does not mean they can interpret. A professional interpreter has undergone specific education and training and has experience in interpreting.
Unlike an untrained person that is likely to make mistakes and might not get your ideas across correctly, a professional interpreter will manage their task with ease.
Also, image how it will make you look if your bilingual staff is doing a poor job interpreting. Probably it would also be an unpleasant and stressful experience for your staff.
Let your staff work on what you hired them for and make a professional impression by hiring a professional interpreter.
Concentrate on the content, not on the language
When talking in a foreign language we tend to focus on the language more than on the content. You might forget about something important you wanted to say or say it in a way that could be misunderstood. An interpreter allows you to speak in your native language without having to worry about grammar or vocabulary. You can concentrate on the content and how to best express your thoughts and ideas. Your business partner can do the same.
At transeuro, we offer professional interpretation for factory visits, tourism, conferences, patents and technical issues in English, Japanese and German.
