Medical translation
Why you should hire a professional translator for medical translation
Nowadays machine translation is easily available at a low price or even for free. However, you should consider carefully whether machine translation is sufficient for your purposes especially in the medical field. In some cases, a wrong translation can mean the difference between life and death.
1. In medical translation mistakes can be fatal
Medicine and pharmacy are fields where precision of translation is vital. Imagine a scientist or medical professional reading a clinical trial protocol or a medical record only to find nonsensical words caused by a bad machine translation or an unqualified translator.
In medical translation, a simple mix up of the terms “Hyper” and “Hypo” can result in a patient receiving the wrong treatment and causing a change of the worse of their situation. A mistranslation of a package leaflet for medicine could result in patients taking a medicine that is not advisable in their health condition.
2. Mistranslation leads to patient being quadriplegic
A famous case of bad translation service in the medical field was the case of 18-year-old Willie Ramirez that was admitted to a hospital in Florida. His family tried to describe his condition that they believed was food poisoning but they only spoke Spanish. A bilingual staff member of the hospital translated the Spanish word “intoxicado” as “intoxicated” when the meaning is actually “poisoned”. The patient was treated for drug overdose even though he was suffering from an intracerebral hemorrhage.
This clumsy translation resulted in the patient being left quadriplegic. He received a compensation sum of $71 million dollars.
