Translation in general
4 Steps on how to get a better Translation from your Translation Service Provider
Translation quality highly depends on the translator. However, even the best translator can only work with what they have got. In this article, we would like to discuss how a client can help the translator to provide their best possible work.
1. Provide Reference Materials for the Translation!
If you have reference materials for the translation that can help the translator to better understand the subject matter or previous materials that already have a translation it is always recommend to provide them if possible. The better the translator understands the subject matter the more exact the translation will be. Also, the translator can check previous translations for phrases and wording to make following translation more consistent with existing translations.
In terms of patent translations in a lot of cases, previous applications of the applicant can be used for reference and these are easily obtainable for us through the databases of the respective patent offices. In case of materials that are not publicly available, we appreciate it if you send them to us.
2. Give us detailed Instructions on how to translate!
If you have certain requirements for your translation, please let us know when placing your order. For example, for court cases sometimes symmetrical translations of patent applications are required. However, when it comes to filing a patent a different format of the translation may be required. If you let us know what purpose the translation is needed for and if there are any requirements it must fulfil, we can provide exactly the translation you need.
Also, if you prefer a certain writing style, format or layout for the translation just let us know. We can provide translations that are very close to the original but also translate more freely in order to make the text sound more natural and engaging depending on your preference and purpose. If you have certain requirements as to the length of the text etc., we can also accommodate them.
3. If possible, provide editable Data of the original File!
Editable formats like word or excel files are always preferred over uneditable files like PDF files. With editable files way the translator can work more efficiently and there is no risk that mistakes occur when the PDF is converted. If you can obtain an editable version of the document to be translated, we would appreciate your assistance on this matter. Otherwise we can of course also work with PDFs and similar formats.
4. Consider the time required for the Translation!
Sometimes the urgent need for a translation cannot be helped but in general, the less time you give the translator the stronger the impact on the quality will be. Depending on the language and subject matter a professional translator can translate around 1.500 to 2.000 words a day. However, the capacities of translators and translation companies are limited and usually, they have work form other clients, as well. On top of that, there are additional steps in the translation process, that take time, like coordinating the project, layouting, double-check by a second linguist, quality control, research of technical terms and wordings, etc.
When working with translators or agencies in other countries time difference is also a factor to consider. The earlier you contact us with a translation request the better the final translation will be and on top of that, you can save additional rush fees that might occur for urgent cases.
We hope this article is helpful for your next translation order and would be glad if you placed it with us. We can translate from Japanese to English and from Japanese to German and the other way around. Feel free to contact us anytime through our contact form.
